All of us – truckers – are required to carry liability car insurance. Automobile liability insurance does not insure our cars, but it does insure other drivers with whom we share the road. If an accident occurs that is our fault, they will not have to pay to repair their cars; Our liability insurance will pay for car repairs. You ARE required to carry auto liability insurance, but you are NOT required to have collision or comprehensive insurance, which would pay to repair your own car after an accident.

Today, you cannot register a vehicle without proof of liability insurance. You also cannot obtain a driver’s license, and when pulled over by a police officer, you are required to present proof of liability insurance along with your valid driver’s license. If you don’t, you will be taken to jail.

There are several ways you can save a few bucks on your auto insurance:

  1. Improve your credit score. The better your credit score, the lower your insurance rate.
  2. Combine your auto insurance with your homeowner’s insurance. You will get a discount when combined.
  3. Ask about discounts. You always get a discount when you insure more than one car, but you may also qualify for discounts if you drive less than 7,500 miles per year, take a safe driving course (defensive driving), your car has an anti-theft device, and your car is equipped with ABS brakes and automatic seat belts that may also qualify for an insurance rate deduction.
  4. If you are driving an older vehicle, cancel your collision and comprehensive coverage. You are likely paying more for coverage than you would if you were in an accident.
